INGREDIENTS

  • 1 package thin filo pastry sheets for baklava
  • 400 g melted butter

 

For the filling:

  • 500 g walnuts
  • 3 tbs dried bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp clove
  • 3 tbs sugar

 

For the syrup:

  • 850 g sugar
  • 2½ cups water
  • 2 vanillins
  • Lemon peel

DIRECTIONS

  1. Grease the aluminum tray with butter and lay the sheets of filo one by one, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  2. Combine all the ingredients for the filling in a bowl.
  3. Every 5 sheets, add the crushed walnut mixture until there are no more sheets of filo left. Cut the baklava and brush with butter.
  4. Bake at 150°C for about 1 hr.
  5. Put the ingredients for the syrup in a pot and simmer for about 10 mins. Allow the syrup to cool.
  6. While the baklava is still hot, pour the syrup over it and allow it to soak in.
  7. Sprinkle some chopped walnuts over the top.
